This is an academic and professional home page for Suzzanne Kelley, Editor in Chief and Assistant Professor of Practice, North Dakota State University Press.
Beginning in 2015, Suzzanne Kelley expanded North Dakota State University Press from publishing one book per year to its present program of ten+ annually. She developed the Certificate in Publishing program, and she teaches courses in conjunction with the activities of the press. She has shepherded more than one hundred books through production, and she established four book series: Contemporary Voices of Indigenous Peoples, Heritage Guide, A Little Book about North Dakota, and Rethinking Rural. A past National Endowment for the Humanities Scholar, Suzzanne is a board member of North Dakota Quarterly, the immediate past president of Midwest Independent Publishers Association, and a past president of Preservation North Dakota, where she oversaw grants from Humanities North Dakota, the Kaplan & Bush Foundations, and Save America’s Treasures.
Suzzanne’s publishing career began in her master’s program, interning as copy editor and fact checker for Chronicles of Oklahoma and Oklahoma Politics. She was Editorial Fellow at NDSU, working as managing editor of Agricultural History (an international journal) and book copy editor from 2003-2005. Suzzanne was managing editor and then co-editor of New Rivers Press from 2009-2015, where she also taught publishing courses to undergraduate and graduate students. In 2015, she began her work with NDSU Press, the first woman to manage the press in its seventy-year history.
Suzzanne’s research projects and publications follow two lines: iconography of memory and collective memory in rural life in the Great Plains and Canadian Prairies, New Zealand, and Australia; and contemporary topics on the history, business, and practice of small press and university publishing.
